Nightly dances at Garner still go on to this day… The river, a refreshing retreat for families from all over, is where young folks make memories that they will tell their children someday. Perhaps downtown has always felt a little slow and lazy — it’s part of the charm of the place — but beloved buildings, like the old drug store, sit empty. The square does not buzz during the day or glow at night like the town squares we cherish. Even as the mainstays such as Mama Chole’s, Mill Creek Inn, and the Mercantile anchor and serve the community, most would agree it’s been far too quiet for too long.

Perhaps downtown needed to rest… to gather itself and determine what it really wants to become for the next generations. Perhaps now is the perfect time for change.
